Girl Gangs

Girl Gangs

Over the last few years streaming services have really taken female led drama shows to the next level. While I will always be nostalgic for 80s teen movies and 90s shows like Saved by the Bell and The Babysitters Club, I crave dark teen girl gang centered shows.

Last year I fell in love with The Wilds, it’s a feminist Lord of the Flies if you will, you can find it on Amazon Prime. Then I found Cruel Summer on Hulu, it’s actually a Freeform show, but it is dark, twisted and fantastic. It’s set in Texas during the 90s, about a girl obsessed with the popular blond barbiesque beauty queen who is kidnapped (or so you think), by a school administrator. I love the twist at the end!

And then there’s Yellowjackets, I first saw the name early last year and was intrigued because my hometown high school sports mascot was a Yellowjacket - I so badly wanted to be a Palo Verdes Yellowjacket cheerleader! Yellowjackets premiered last December on Showtime and is very much another twisted feminist version of Lord of Flies, only instead of an island like in The Wilds, the girls are stranded in the Canadian wilderness. With cults, cannibalism, seances and supernatural elements, it’s one of the best first seasons of a show I’ve watched in a long time. Although Never Have I Ever has a pretty fantastic first season too, but that’s a post all on it’s own.

If you’re into dark teen thrillers, I highly recommend these three show!
