Five Things to Know About Julia Margaret Cameron

1. One of the leading female pioneers in early 19th century photography.

2. Cameron started taking pictures relatively late in life. In 1863, at 48 years old, she received her first camera from her daughter.

3. Although her work is considered to be the first up close photographic portraits in history, her work was heavily criticized by peers for being out of focus, among many other things.

4. Cameron upheld a long-term relationship with Sir Henry Cole, the director/curator of the South Kensington Gallery, and was even given a studio space in the gallery qualifying her as the gallery's first artist in residence. She was at the epi-center of an intellectual and artistic movement and this was unusual for a British woman at the time.

5. She created around 900 photographs over a 12-year period.
